Newcastle held off a late Worcester fightback at Kingston Park to move away from the Premiership relegation zone.

The Falcons led 13-7 at the break as Matt Burke followed up an early penalty with the opening try after 29 minutes.

The visitors hit back with a converted score from wing Aisea Havili but a Dave Walder try and Burke's third penalty on the hour put Newcastle 21-10 ahead.

Tony Windo secured a bonus point with Worcester's second try with 14 minutes left, but the hosts held them at bay.

Jonny Wilkinson's latest comeback was delayed by at least another week after he failed to make the Newcastle bench.

Wilkinson targets return at Wasps

Among a provisional nine-man panel of replacements, the England fly-half will now aim for next Sunday's Premiership match at Wasps.

Newcastle director of rugby Rob Andrew:
"We kept nudging ahead and then kept giving them something back and that's why it was so tense in the last 20 minutes.

"It was a very important win for us, we've now won three in a row in the league and we competed well up front against Worcester who are not an easy side to play against.

"I said that when Matt Burke came here he was the best full-back in the world and he still is. He's just a class act."
