Former Wigan prop Harvey Howard has retired after failing to recover from the effects of a car crash.

The front rower, 34, is among a select band of Englishmen to have won an Australian Grand Final winners' medal, helping Brisbane to victory in 2001.

He also made one appearance for Great Britain in 1998 and was part of England's World Cup squad in 2000.

"It's very disappointing because I feel as though I still have a couple more seasons left in me," said Howard.

Howard began his professional career with home-town club Widnes in 1990 and went on to play for Leeds, Bradford and Wigan before joining Hull KR last season.

He also had three spells in Australia with Eastern Suburbs, Western Suburbs and the Broncos.
