Gene will be off to Australia for World Cup duty with Papau New Guinea

Hull KR veteran Stanley Gene has signed a new one-year contract with the club.

The versatile 34-year-old, who will play for Papua New Guinea in the forthcoming World Cup, is in his testimonial year at Craven Park.

Robins chairman Neil Hudgell told BBC Radio Humberside: "All decisions about playing contracts are within the remit of the head coach [Justin Morgan].

"He felt Stanley had done enough to deserve a new 12-month deal. Certainly sentiment is nowhere in the equation."

Gene rejoined the Robins from Bradford following their promotion to Super League in 2006.

"It's a 12-month contract at this stage and after that - who knows? I certainly wouldn't close the door on a further stint beyond next season," added Hudgell.

"At some stage before this season I'm not so sure I thought he could do another year but he's certainly made it up to this point so going forward I wouldn't rule anything in or anything out with him."

"I love rugby league and I love this club." said Gene, who has also played for Hull, Huddersfield and Bradford.

"Rovers gave me my first chance when I came over here and will always hold a very special place in my heart."

Morgan, who is a year younger than Gene, said: "Stan is like a fine wine that matures with age.

"He never ceases to amaze me with his ability week-in, week-out. He is a valued member of the team who is very much in our plans for next season."
