Castleford came from 26-8 down in the final quarter to seal a superb comeback with a dramatic win at The Jungle.
The Reds appeared to be cruising when they came from 8-6 down early on to lead 16-8 at half-time.
They then added further tries by David Hodgson and Junior Langi to go 26-8 up.
But in a frantic final quarter, Cas scored four tries, Richard Fa'aoso, Danny Nutley, Gray Viane and Willie Manu all crossing to cap the fightback.
The Tigers led 8-6 through tries by Ben Roarty and Brad Davis, Simon Finnigan replying for the Reds.
But scores by Aaron Moule and Jon Wilshere gave the Reds a handy interval lead.
When Hodgson, with a spectacular effort, and Langi scored further tries there appeared no way back for the Tigers.
But tries by Fa'aoso and Nutley and a Craig Huby conversion reduced Tigers' deficit to 26-16.
Viane then went over from close range and Huby kicked a touchline conversion to reduce the deficit to just two points, before Manu stormed over for the winning try.
The Tigers weathered a late Salford onslaught to notch their first win in six matches and send Salford sliding to their third successive defeat.
Castleford coach Terry Matterson:
"Manu's try was outstanding. It was a pretty special effort.
"At 26-8 down we put a few players on and got a little bit of momentum and
Salford couldn't stop us in the end.
"When we trailed 26-8 I didn't think it was a true reflection of the game. We were near their line for a long time in the first half but came in 16-8 down."
Salford coach Karl Harrison:
"We didn't play well from the first minute of the game. I thought we were poor all day. We looked a very tired team.
"The three hard games last week took a lot out of us.
"We played Warrington, Leeds and Saints within seven days and that probably took more out of us than we thought."
