First-half tries from Keiron Cunningham and Willie Talau put the league leaders 12-0 up at the interval.

The Wolves were hampered by the loss of half-back Chris Bridge, taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm.

They did score via Henry Fa'afili and Mike Wainwright either side of an Ade Gardner try, but Jamie Lyon's late penalty sealed victory for Saints.

It was their 22nd win in 25 Super League encounters against their local rivals from across the M62.

A covering of snow lay over half the pitch at the outset, but the temperature quickly rose when Saints' Jason Hooper caught Lee Briers with a late hit in the second minute.

Briers got to his feet and grappled with Hooper on the ground, but both players escaped with a ticking-off.

Warrington might have scored when Gardner dropped a high bomb from Briers but it was Saints who took the lead in the 10th minute.

Sean Long launched a steepling kick which Lyon caught superbly and off-loaded for the supporting Cunningham to dive over.

Lyon added the goal but Saints spent the next 20 minutes defending as the Wolves piled on the pressure, but were unable to find a way over.

Instead, the visitors doubled their lead on the half-hour when Francis Meli brushed off Briers' flimsy tackle and fed Talau, who sprinted 60 metres to touch down, Lyon adding the extras.

Warrington hit back early in the second half when Fa'afili athletically caught Briers' chip to touch down in the right corner.

But Saints reasserted themselves when Gardner scored after another brilliant pass from Lyon.

Hooper then went to the sin-bin for his second late tackle on Briers, who seized on the extra man advantage to put Mike Wainwright over, the goal cutting the deficit to 16-10.

But Saints' defence kept the Wolves at bay and Lyon's penalty with two minutes put the seal on an impressive win.
