Anderson quits Wolves

Warrington Wolves have had little to celebrate this year
Warrington's performance director Steve Anderson has resigned after less than a year in charge at Wilderspool.

The Australian was appointed on a four-year contract in August 2001 but has seen Wolves slump to the bottom of the Super League after losing seven of their first eight games.

Last month, he handed over the role as first team coach to his assistant David Plange in order to concentrate on his duties as director of rugby.

Anderson, who was right-hand man to Australia's 2000 World Cup coach Chris Anderson, tended his resignation before Tuesday's 28-14 loss to London Broncos.

Plange faced a mini-demonstration by angry fans after his first game as frontline coach on Tuesday.

We have been unable to match our training work with results on the field but I know that things will turn

Anderson is now being linked with the vacant job of performance director at the Rugby Football League, where Great Britain coach David Waite is filling a caretaker role.

Anderson quit his backroom post at Leeds Rhinos last summer to succeed fellow Australian Darryl Van de Velde at Wilderspool.

He introduced widespread changes to the playing staff and initiated new coaching structures.

"Although I've only been here for 10 months, a lot of positives can be seen with the work to date," said Anderson.

"Unfortunately, we have been unable to match that work with results on the field but I know that things will turn.

"The current coaching structure is solid from scholarship through to the first team and must be maintained for continuity and stability.

"David Plange, Paul Darbyshire and Gary Chambers are in charge of the plans and represent the future of the club."

Warrington chairman Doug Hoyle said: "I would like to place on record our thanks to Steve for his hard work and commitment and wish Steve and Marie all the best for the future."
