John Pendlebury, coach of National League club Oldham, has resigned just three games into the new season.
The former Wigan, Leigh and Bradford forward cited personal reasons for his decision, which came as "a bolt from the blue" to chairman Chris Hamilton.
But Pendlebury, who gave up his job in the building trade to return to the game, was frustrated by the club's difficulties with training facilities.
Assistant coach Keith Brennan has been placed in temporary charge.
His first task will be to prepare the side for Wednesday's rearranged Northern Rail Cup match at Halifax, followed by a Powergen Cup tie with local amateurs Saddleworth this weekend.
Pendlebury was once Super League coach of the year after guiding Halifax to third place.
