Kiwis call up youngsters

Gary Tupou
New Zealand have called up two young players to their Tri-Nations Series training squad.

Gary Tupou, 21, of the New Zealand Warriors has been brought in after playing just three senior games.

And his Warriors team-mate Marcus Perenara, 19, also receives a call-up before having made his senior debut.

New Zealand have suffered several high-profile retirements ahead of the end-of-season tournament with Stacey Jones and Richard Swain both standing down.

New Zealand are selecting players - from both the NRL and Super League - on a week-by-week basis once they are no longer needed for club duties.

Other new call-ups include Melbourne Storm forwards Alex Chan and David Kidwell

Last week, Clinton Toopi was named in their squad despite needing thumb surgery.

He was joined by team-mates Iafeta Paleaaesina, Francis Meli, Brent Webb, Louis Anderson, Wairangi Koopu, Vinnie Anderson and Thomas Leuluai.

Others in the squad are George Carmont, Bronson Harrison, Dene Halatau, Nigel Vagana, Ruben Wiki and Nathan Cayless.

New Zealand take on Australia in the opening game of the inaugural competition on Saturday, 16 October.
