Bulls look good for title
By Ray French
BBC rugby league commentator

If you listen to any rugby league fan at the moment, there only seems to be one talking point - the controversy over the new rules and the interpretation of the old ones.

And that is just days before the start of Super League VIII this weekend!

The big questions for me are:

  • What effect the introduction of the 12-man interchange system will have;

  • And how the game will be altered by the banning of quick tap penalties.

Expect a strong challenge from Hull, who will be boosted by thousands of fans flocking to their new all-seater stadium

I believe that the ability to 'roll on, roll off' giant forwards like Bradford Bulls duo Joe Vagana and Paul Anderson will see an even greater emphasis on power.

If you agree, then you need look no further for your candidate for team of the year.

But if you believe Salford director of rugby Steve Simms, then Leeds look a good bet to challenge for the title.

Simms thinks the new rules will benefit teams with smaller, more athletic men, especially when it gets hot in the summer.

And that should suit the Rhinos, who have players like Rob Burrows, Ryan Bailey and Danny Ward.

I must sound a note of caution, though.

The banning of quick tap penalties and snappy 20-metre re-starts is likely to slow down the play and hinder the smaller men.

Wigan have a combination of experience - in Andy Farrell and Adrian Lam - and youth - in Sean O'Loughlin and Ricky Bibey - and should be well suited to either style of play.

But champions St Helens could struggle in the opening months.

Despite the inspirational talents of Paul Sculthorpe, Sean Long and Darren Albert, they will be without injured hooker Keiron Cunningham.

That means Ian Millward's priority will be securing a play-off place so they can launch a challenge for the main prize.

Expect a strong challenge from Hull, who will be boosted by thousands of fans flocking to their new all-seater stadium.

They have added genuine pace to the back division with the signing of former New Zealand skipper Richie Barnett.

And youngsters Richard Horne, Gareth Carvell and Paul Cooke will provide the enthusiasm in midfield.

As for Castleford, London and Widnes, they will all be chasing an end of season play-off spot again.

The Vikings have been hit by the loss of halves Craig Weston and Steve Carter.

I will opt for the Bulls but I expect St Helens or Leeds to try to prove me wrong

And with Henry Paul opting to stay in rugby union, boss Neil Kelly, who was the coach of the year in 2002, could have his work cut out.

But the Tigers and Broncos will both be hopeful of making the top six.

With Warrington coach Paul Cullen will be looking for a comfortable mid-table position, the real action should be across the Pennines.

Wakefield Trinity, Halifax and newly-promoted Huddersfield will be involved in a tense dogfight to avoid the drop.

Back at the summit, I believe the new rules could well play a decisive role in determining who comes out on top.

Big men or little men? Take your pick.

I am opting for the Bulls but expect St Helens or Leeds to try to prove me wrong.
