Germany's Hilde Gerg, the 1998 Olympic slalom champion, has decided to retire after undergoing knee surgery following a serious training accident last week.
The 30-year-old ruptured cruciate ligaments in the crash on the slopes of Colorado's Copper Mountain on Thursday.
Gerg made the first of three Olympic appearances in Lillehammer in 1994 aged 18, but her finest hour came in Nagano four years later when she won gold.
"I am very frustrated but there is no point any more," Gerg told Bild Daily.
