Sir Alex Ferguson's Rock of Gibraltar held off a scintillating late burst from favourite Hawk Wing to land the first Classic of the Flat season.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Rock of Gibraltar hugged the right-hand side of the course and went clear in the final furlong as stablemate Hawk Wing romped clear of the pack on the left.

But the faster ground to the jockeys' right proved the key as the Johnny Murtagh-ridden Rock of Gibraltar won by a short head from Jamie Spencer's mount with half a length further back to Redback.

French challenger Zipping was fourth at 40-1.

1515 Ladbrokes.com Handicap (6f)

3 Blue Velvet 16-1 (O Peslier)

Favourite Marsad wins for the second straight year in a photo finish from Peruvian Chief.

Marsad was backed down from 22-1 this morning and jockey Paul Doe left it late in the group on the right-hand side of the course before storming home by a short head.

Outsider Peruvian chief ran an impressive race to hold off Blue Velvet with Lisianski (14-1) in third.

1 Kyllachy 2-1f (J Spencer)

Jamie Spencer rove hot favourite Kyllachy up the inside to snatch the win after a five-way photo finish.

Kyllachy became the first favourite to win for eight years with Smokin Beau second by a short head as Bahamian Pirate got up for third with Indian Spark (20-1) edged into fourth.

The pair went clear a long way out and only the Johnny Murtagh-ridden Pole Star could stage a decent challenge on the outside.

Kelburne hung on to win by a couple of lengths with Prize Winner edging out 7-2 favourite Wood Dalling into fourth.
