Keith Dalgleish - second in the apprentice championship last season - pushed Takes Tutu to the front with just under a furlong to travel.

The pair held off a spirited challenge from Jamie Spencer on board the fast-moving Grizedale to win by half a length.

Lady Lindsay got up to finish in third with the Mick Channon-trained Pic Up Sticks fourth as the favourite Cassirer, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, fell back.

17 ran with Kool - pronounced lame in the paddock - a non-runner.


1450: Sagitta Jockey Club Stakes
(Group Two, one mile four furlongs)

1 Marienbard 9-1 (J Spencer)
2 Millenary 9-4f (Pat Eddery)
3 Storming Home 5-1 (M Hills)

Godolphin's Marienbard surged home from off the pace to beat last year's winner - and 2000 St Leger champion - Millenary by a nose.

Jockey Jamie Spencer left the run until the last minute to pip Pat Eddery's mount with Storming Home in third.

Gritty Zindabad was fourth with Asian Heights a non-runner.


1415: Pearl and Coutts Newmarket Stakes
(Listed race, one mile two furlongs)

1 Highdown 11-2 (M Dwyer)
2 Moon Ballad 11-4 (J Spencer)
3 Judgement 11-8f (R Hughes)

The Marcus Tregoning-trained Highdown edged out second favourite Moon Ballad - a drifter in the market - by a short head.

Hotly fancied Derby entrant Judgement trailed in eights length back in third.


1345: Waterford House Brian Madell Handicap
(One mile two furlongs)

1 Jabaar 4-1f (R Hills)
2 Pretrail 14-1 (K Darley)
3 Morro Castle 33-1 (P Robinson

Top weight and clear favourite Jabaar, ridden by Richard Hills, burst clear of the pack to win by three lengths from Pretrail.

Outsider Morro Castle came in third with Street Life (20-1) in fourth.
