Welding knocks out top seed Lloyd
Gary Welding
Top seed Colin Lloyd slipped to a surprise first-round defeat against St Helens qualifier Gary Welding in the PDC World Championship.

The 32-year-old from Essex was beaten 3-2 despite cruising to a 2-0 lead.

Welding hit back and levelled the match at 2-2 before closing with double five, which he celebrated with a belly flop on the oche.

Fourth seed Roland Scholten beat Dave Whitcombe 3-1, and number five seed Peter Manley beat Kevin Spiolek 3-0.

"I was confident of beating him," said world number 52 Welding.

"I've been hitting a lot of 180s in practice.

"I just ignored what Colin was doing early in the match but I noticed he started having a lot of bounce-outs. It was all down to determination. I just stuck in there and never gave in.

"I thought I had the second worst draw next to having to face Phil Taylor, but Colin has been playing as well as Phil. I thought if I could beat him I would get all the limelight!"

Sixteenth seed Lionel Sams also crashed out, losing 3-0 to American number one John Kuczynski.

And Erwin Extercatte of the Netherlands beat 32nd seed Darren Webster 3-2.

Twelfth seed Mark Walsh had a comfortable 3-0 win over Warren Parry of New Zealand.

Dennis Smith of England, the number 21 seed, squeezed through against Wales' Mark Salmon, winning 3-2.
