Holden back on form in Purfleet
Mark Holden celebrates victory
Holden said he had considered quitting the game
Mark Holden thrashed James Wade 3-0 in the first round of the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship in Purfleet.

Holden, who is nicknamed "Top Banana", has not played in over 10 months after a crisis of confidence, and he said: "I've got unfinished business here.

"I was embarrassed by how badly I played 12 months ago."

Jason Clarke beat Japan's Yasuhiko Matsunaga 3-0 while Canada's Gerry Convery defeated China's Tang Jun, also in straight sets.

Convery's Canadian compatriot John Verwey beat Anthony Forde, of Barbados, 2-1 in a close-fought encounter.

And Dutch qualifier Josephus Schenk edged a close contest with American Darin Young.

Schenk was never behind but Young twice cancelled out his one-set lead before the Dutchman advanced to the second round 3-2.

In the final match of the round, Andy Hamilton whitewashed Mark Thomson.
