Colombia's Luis Felipe Laverde won stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia from Aosta to Domodossola on Sunday.
The Ceramica Panaria rider proved too good as he went head to head with Spain's Francisco Perez Sanchez in the dying metres of the stage.
The result, though, failed to have a major bearing on the leading overall standings in the race.
Italian Ivan Basso still leads the race - by three minutes and 27 seconds - from Francisco Perez.
Afterwards Laverde said: "I knew Basso and the other overall contenders would let a
breakaway go clear and so I knew I had to get in it.
"It wasn't easy to win because all the riders in the attack wanted to win but everything went my way.
"The break stayed clear, I got away with Perez in the final kilometres and then jumped away 100 metres from the finish."
