World champion Paul Foster has become the biggest name to exit from the £64,000 BUPA Care Homes Open in Blackpool.

The Scot lost in a match tie-break shoot-out to Cambridgeshire's Greg Harlow.

Fourth seed Foster came from behind to snatch the opening set 6-5.

But Harlow reversed that scoreline in the second and then grabbed the vital shot in the shoot-out decider.

Foster said: "When it went to a shoot-out I knew it was anybody's match.

"I was unlucky with my last bowl but full marks to Greg, he played a great last bowl under pressure to draw the shot."

Welsh duo Robert Weale and John Price, both former world champions, moved through to the quarter-finals.

Weale coasted to a 12-0 8-3 win over South Africa's Johann Du Plessis.

But Price had to pull out all the stops before edging out New Zealand's Steve Posa on the tie-break decider.

Number 11 seed Noel Kennedy from Hong Kong was another tie-break victim losing to Australia's Alan Thurlow.

England's Mark McMahon, the reigning world pairs champion, progressed with a 9-4 9-4 win over Guernsey's Adrian Welch.
