Abby Wambach in action for the USA
Abby Wambach scored her 17th goal in 18 games
The United States set up a semi-final showdown against world champions Germany after a 2-1 victory over Japan in the women's football on Friday.

Abby Wambach scored the winner in the 58th minute when she sprung the off-side trap for a simple tap-in.

Elsewhere, Germany secured a 2-1 win over Nigeria thanks to a winner from Connie Pohlers while Sweden beat Australia with the same scoreline.

Formiga and Cristiane scored two goals each as Brazil thrashed Mexico 5-0.
