Ignatyev takes points gold
Mikhail Ignatyev of Russia
Mikhail Ignatyev of Russia produced an awesome display to win the gold medal in the men's points race on Tuesday.

Ignatyev coasted to victory on 93 points after making the vital breakthrough with two of the 16 sprints remaining in the 40km race.

Defending champion Joan Llaneras of Spain got the silver with 82 and German Guido Fulst came third with 79.

Britain's Chris Newton pulled out midway through the race, having gained just one point on the third sprint.

Ignatyev was always prominent in the 23-strong field over 160 laps after taking the lead after the fifth of 16 designated sprints when he led a breakaway to lap the field and gained 20 points.

The Russian went on to lap the pack three more times - one more than the other medalists - to score his first major international victory.

The points race was run over 160 laps of the Olympic Velodrome, with intermediate sprints set each 10 laps.

The winner each time got 5 points, with twice as many going for the sprint for the finish line.

If a rider lapped the pack, he got an additional 20 points.
