US reach volleyball semi-finals

US now face arch-rivals Cuba

The United States came out on top in a five-set marathon at the expense of Italy to set up a semi-final tie against Cuba.

The team recorded a 20-25 25-21 19-25 25-18 15-6 win with Logan Tom scoring 19 points while pin-up Francesca Piccinini grabbed 17 points for Italy.

Cuba knocked out Serbia 26-24 25-19 26-24 while reigning champions China beat Russia 25-22 27-25 25-19.

Russia will face Brazil who clinched a 25-12 25-20 25-16 win over Japan.
