McDonnell (left) produced outstanding form for Armagh this year

Armagh's Steven McDonnell has been named as the Gaelic Players' Association's Footballer of the Year.

Despite not being on the winning team in this year's All-Ireland Championship, McDonnell had an outstanding season for Joe Kernan's team.

He then went on to produce outstanding form for Ireland's International Rules side in Australia.

McDonnell held off the claims of Tyrone trio Peter Canavan, Philip Jordan and Sean Cavanagh to take the football award.

Kilkenny's JJ Delaney won the hurling award where his team-mates Noel Hickey and Eddie Brennan and Cork's Setanta O hAilpin were the other contenders.

Both McDonnell and Delaney won Seat cars for their achievements.
