GAA officials play down hotel rumpus
Tommy Lyons denied Dublin players were involved
Dublin GAA officials have denied that players from the county's football squad were included in drunken behaviour at an hotel in South Africa last week.
The manager of an hotel in Cape Town, where the Dublin football and Kilkenny hurling teams are on holiday, claimed that drunken and naked players threw furniture into the hotel swimming pool. It was also claimed that the hotel management called the police to the premises because they felt incapable of controlling the situation. "The sort of behaviour we witnessed was not the sort of behaviour we have come to expect and appreciate from Irish people," said Richard Bray, manager of the Cullinan Hotel. An Irish woman who was staying in the hotel described the players involved as "boorish and ignorant". Roscommon rumpus However, Dublin GAA chief executive John Costelloe has insisted that the county's players were not involved in the incident. "Last evening, I spoke to team manager Tommy Lyons, who assured me no Dublin player was involved in any unsavoury incident during the course of their current holiday," said Costelloe. "Tommy told me that they have represented their county impeccably while abroad," he said. Kilkenny hurling boss manager Brian Cody also defended his players, saying that: "to the best of my knowledge, none of the Kilkenny players were involved". Last year, the entire Roscommon football panel were sacked after two players indulged in a game of naked pool at an hotel in Derry. |
