Irish players slam Rules ref

Ireland drew with Australia in the second Test game
Ireland players have lashed out at Australian referee Scott McClaren after his handling of Sunday's second International Rules test at Croke Park.

Australia came from behind to draw Sunday's match 42-42 and win the series 65-58, but the Irish players felt they were harshly treated by McClaren.

The Australian called play back for over-carrying at the death with Ireland on the attack - the first time a free had been given for such an offence in either test.

"Their referee gave them everything," claimed Ireland's Padraig Joyce.

"It was hard enough to play on such a bad day without having so many bad decisions go against you.

Accept defeat

"It was very frustrating to have so many calls go their way."

Aussie manager Garry Lyon responded to the claims of the Irish players by saying that they should just accept defeat.

"The thing you don't do from our point of view is whinge and moan about referees, whether you win, lose or draw," he said.

"But the refs have a really tough job - twice a year with a game that is so foreign to them.

"The Irish were frustrated but we were too. You just have to get on with it."
