Nick Heidfeld will drive for Jordan next year as long as the British team can raise the finances.
The German driver has been looking for a new team since his release by Sauber at the end of last season.
The 26-year-old has signed a preliminary contract with Jordan, but he has had to take a pay cut.
Heidfield hopes more sponsor space will make up the shortfall, but insisted: "Money is not important for me. I just want to stay in Formula One."
Heidfeld found himself out of a job at Sauber after they signed Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and Brazilian Felipe Massa.
But he will jet out to Spanish city Jerez on Wednesday to test the new Jordan car.
"I am really looking forward to this challenge," said Heidfeld.
Last month Heidfeld spoke about his torment at the prospect of not securing a drive for the 2004 championship.
