Former world champion Colin McRae is to make a second attempt to win the trans-Saharan Dakar Rally next year.

The Scot has re-signed with the Nissan team, for whom he impressed on his Dakar debut this season.

McRae said: "I have no reason to doubt I can win the Dakar with Nissan. We've already started talking about how we can improve the car for next year."

McRae won two stages on the 2004 Dakar but finished 20th after car problems left him stranded in the desert.

"Nissan has renewed its contract with Colin McRae," a team statement said. "He will be fully involved in the development programme for the 2005 car and will take part in all the test sessions planned over the coming months."

The team said there was also a possibility that the 35-year-old, who won the rally world title in 1995, would participate in the Desert Challenge in the United Arab Emirates in October as part of his new deal.
