Greene pulls out of Zurich

Greene (left) strives for glory in Edmonton
World 100 metres champion Maurice Greene has announced that he will not compete in the Zurich Golden League meeting later this month.

The competition in Switzerland begins on 17 August but the American world record holder is still struggling with the thigh injury he picked up in Edmonton.

"I will not be back for that. Zurich is too early," Greene said on Wednesday.

Greene won gold in Sunday's World 100m final, ahead of compatriots Tim Montgomery and Bernard Williams, but finished the race clutching his leg.

Long-term problem?

His injury meant he was unable to defend his 200m title - he also decided not to run in the 4x100m relay.

Greene has been suffering from a long-standing knee injury and had a slight strain in his left quadricep in the 100m final.

After withdrawing from the remainder of the championships in Canada, he had hoped for a swift recovery and a re-match with Montgomery in Zurich.

He is now set to return to the United States for treatment.

His withdrawal from Zurich will cast a doubt over his participation in other meetings later this summer, including in Brussels, Gateshead, as well as the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia in September.
