Jones tastes shock defeat
Zhanna Pintusevich-Block pips Marion Jones to take gold
Pintusevich-Block pips Marion Jones to take 100m gold
Zhanna Pintusevich-Block recorded the first major shock of the World Championships in Edmonton by beating two-time champion Marion Jones into second place in the women's 100m final on Monday.

The Ukrainian star signalled her intentions to upset the form book by beating Jones in the semi-final.

Pintusevich-Block repeated the trick in the final, clocking a time of 10.82 seconds, to hand Jones her first defeat in 42 finals.

I am a bit disappointed but I am not a sore loser and you have to give credit to Zhanna

Jones recorded 10.85, with Ekaterini Thanou of Greece third in 10.91.

"This is unbelievable," said Pintusevich-Block after taking 0.3secs off her previous best.

"I have been running well this season, but you never know what is going to happen when you come to a major championships.

"I thought I could beat Marion after the semi-final, but I knew that it was still going to be difficult."

Olympic champion Jones said: "I am a bit disappointed but I am not a sore loser and you have to give credit to Zhanna. She was the better performer today."

Athens revenge

Jones' semi-final defeat was a surprise setback, but one she was expected to bounce back from with another dominant performance in a major final.

Pintusevich-Block, however, had other ideas, and stormed out of the blocks to pile the pressure on a suddenly vulnerable Jones.

The 29-year-old Ukrainian's victory finally erased the memories of the 1997 World Championships in Athens, where Jones won her first title.

The Ukranian thought she had won and had begun her celebrations when the scoreboard revealed she had been in fact lost by just 0.02secs.

Jones retained her crown in Seville in 1999 and had been expected to emulate the hat-trick of 100m wins that fellow American Maurice Greene achieved on Sunday.

But those hopes were left in tatters in one of the biggest upsets in recent sprint history. It was her first defeat in 42 finals.
