No Ryder Cup repeat for Azinger

Victorious US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger
Azinger was a popular captain as the US claimed a comprehensive victory

Victorious US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger will not retain the post for the defence against Europe in 2010.

The PGA of America will announce the new captain on Thursday, with Corey Pavin the strong favourite to take on the role at Celtic Manor in Wales.

"It ain't gonna be me," Azinger said on Monday. "I am not the captain."

America's players lobbied for Azinger to return to the role in 2010, and the former PGA champion was said to be considering it.

He guided the US to a comprehensive 16½-11½ win over Europe at Valhalla in September, their first win in the event since 1999.

When he took the post he persuaded the USPGA to revamp the qualification process to base it exclusively on money, with more weight on the majors. He also had a record four captain's picks.

Pavin made three Ryder Cup appearances during his career and was one of Tom Lehman's assistants at the 2006 event at the K Club in Ireland.
