Jim Furyk shot a 69 for a halfway total of eight under at the Barclays Classic at the Westchester club, but Brian Gay's 66 cut his lead to one shot.
Three ahead overnight, Furyk had a birdie and bogey on both nines, but holed a 156-yard second shot to eagle the eighth, rated the toughest hole.
Gay produced three birdies on each nine to take sole possession of second spot.
Padraig Harrington eagled the 18th for a 65 to lie a shot further back, while Vijay Singh's 71 left him three under.
Furyk, seeking his first win for two years, was happy with his consistency.
"It is nice, it is a good feeling after coming off a good first
round," he said.
"It is a good feeling to go out and play a solid round, hit
a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens.
"Really, I didn't get in trouble a lot, I just had to make
a few key par saves."
Gay, whose best finish on the tour this season was 17th in Tucson, had to endure the most difficult conditions of the day having been amongst the later starters in a blustery wind.
Singh, with three victories and two second places on the tour this season, dropped shots at the ninth and 10th as he struggled to gain ground.
Defending champion Sergio Garcia, who finished with four consecutive dropped shots on the opening day, had three more in his opening nine as he began from the 10th.
But he recovered with three birdies to card a 71 and remain one over.
"I felt like I played well but I just couldn't make a putt," he said.
