Captain Duncan is incensed by American whispers Great Britain and Ireland skipper George Duncan was incensed when he overheard his opposite number Walter Hagen telling Gene Sarazen that he was guaranteed a point against Duncan. A fuming Duncan went out and won his 36hole contest and inspired his GB and Ireland team to a 75 victory.
1949
US captain Hogan takes a swipe at opposition United States team captain Ben Hogan complained about the clubs that were being used by Great Britain and Ireland at the Ganton course in Yorkshire. Some thought the American skipper was making a retaliatory gesture after Henry Cotton made a similar comment about Cotton's tools two years earlier. The US went on to win 75.
1957
Yorkshire fans are hit by a Bolt from the blue Great Britain and Ireland produced one of the great singles performances to win on a controversial last day during which Tommy Bolt of America described the home crowd as the worst in the world. quotI guess you won but I didn't enjoy itquot he said after losing to Eric Brown. quotNor would I after the licking I've just given youquot Brown said.
1969
Samaritan Nicklaus incurs the wrath of skipper Snead The outcome of the 1969 match was to be decided by the last putt. But with Tony Jacklin set to line up a three footer for the draw his opponent Jack Nicklaus picked up the marker saying quotI don't think you would have missed that Tony but I didn't want to give you the chance.quot He was later criticised by US captain Sam Snead.
1971
Caddie comments cost GB and Ireland Bernard Gallacher's caddie wished he had not opened his mouth when he asked American Arnold Palmer what club he had used on the 17th hole. Palmer and his bag man consulted a referee and the hole was given to the Americans because the Britons had contravened a rule governing illegal requests for advice.
1979
Brown and James unhappy with new Europe Out went 'Great Britain and Ireland' and in came 'Europe' as the format changed in order to stop the American juggernaut. But two British players Ken Brown and Mark James were less than enthused about the idea and were fined by officials after refusing to wear the team jacket or attend meetings.
1987
Crenshaw succumbs to club rage Frustration for United States player Ben Crenshaw proved so much that he snapped his putter during his match with Irishman Eamonn Darcy on the sixth green. Crenshaw completed his round putting with either his one iron or sand wedge. Amazingly he was still in contention until the 18th where Darcy finally triumphed.
1991
War on the Shore at Kiawah Island A golfing magazine previewing the 1991 event gave it the tag of 'War on the Shore' a thoughtless reference to the ongoing Iraq conflict but one which stuck nonetheless. Two US players Corey Pavin and Steve Pate wore camouflage hats in keeping with the theme while the American fans jeered the visitors.
1999
Brookline finale leaves a sour taste American Justin Leonard holed a great putt on the 17th in his match against JoseMaria Olazabal to virtually ensure victory for the United States. It prompted wild celebrations that many deemed premature with one hole left to play. Europe captain Mark James later said it was quotthe most disgraceful scene ever seen at a golfing eventquot.
