Sunderland striker Niall Quinn has been presented with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Merit Award on Sunday.

The Republic of Ireland international was given the honour in recognition of his long career in football.

The award was presented to the 35-year-old Dubliner by his international manager Mick McCarthy at the PFA's award ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

"I have been around a long time but there is still life in the old dog yet," said Quinn.

"This award is very special to me; something I will cherish for the rest of my life."

The veteran striker is donating the proceeds from his forthcoming testimonial match between Ireland and Sunderland to charity.

"I have always promised myself that if I reached a level where I had a very comfortable lifestyle I would help others less fortunate than myself," he said.
