Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace admits he will not be able to appoint a new manager before Saturday's FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at Salisbury.
Borough are searching for a successor to Mark Stimson, who resigned as manager last week.
"We've got a shortlist now, which will get even shorter next week," Wallace told his club's website.
"I expect some of those on it will be at Saturday's game watching the team's performance for future reference."
Stimson's former assistant Scott Barrett will take charge of the team on Saturday, along with chief executive Bob Makin.
