Southend are "considering their response" after teenage forward Gary Hooper's U-turn over a new contract.
The 19-year-old was expected at Roots Hall on Thursday to sign a new two-year deal, but has told the club he is only willing to commit himself for one year.
Shrimpers assistant manager Paul Brush told BBC Essex: "We are disappointed with Gary's lack of long-term commitment to Southend.
"We will consider our response over the weekend," he added.
Hooper joined Southend from Grays last summer, starting just three games but making 16 substitute appearances.
