The 29-year-old Icelandic midfielder joined Stoke in 1999 and made more than 150 appearances before joining Nottingham Forest in 2003.
He moved to Watford on a free transfer in July 2004, making 36 Championship appearances for the Hornets.
Gunnarsson has represented his country on 50 occasions, most recently in June's World Cup qualifying matches.
