Fans boss still fears for McLeish
Rangers manager Alex McLeish
An announcement is expected on Alex McLeish on Thursday
Rangers fans chief John Macmillan believes many supporters still want Alex McLeish sacked as boss, despite Tuesday's European glory night.

The general secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association thinks qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages might not save McLeish.

"They enjoyed a performance for the first time in a long time," he said.

"But a large number of fans feel that, because of the domestic situation, a change is still needed."

The 1-1 draw with Inter Milan meant Rangers finished second in Group H and became the first Scottish club to progress beyond the group stage.

But McLeish still faces a pre-planned discussion about his future with chairman David Murray following weeks of speculation about possible successors.
Rangers should stand by Alex
Former Rangers midfielder Ray Wilkins

An announcement is expected on Thursday and Macmillan admits that his fellow fans have mixed feelings.

"There was a marked change from the domestic performances," he said.

"It was a great achievement to qualify, but they must improve the domestic situation and that might be the thing that determines whether Alex McLeish stays or goes.

"But my own feeling is that there's going to be a sting in the tail here somewhere."

Former Rangers midfielder Ray Wilkins believes that McLeish deserves more time in charge.

"Rangers should stand by Alex and give him a fair crack of the whip and the confidence he deserves to carry on in the job, because he has handled himself with the utmost dignity," he told BBC Sport.

"A couple of seasons ago, he won the treble and could have walked away then, but he felt he had something more to achieve in Europe and now he's made history."

Wilkins could understand why Rangers could progress in Europe while slipping to fifth in the Scottish Premier League.

"I think the European thing has a massive effect on domestic form at times," he said.

"Rangers are not the first team to suffer and they won't be the last.

"Some players seem to prioritise what they feel is more important.

"Maybe they have taken the foot off the pedal, but the quality of the teams in the Scottish league does not allow you to do that.

"They have shown in Europe that they can raise their game."
