The 26-year-old has played just once this season and the Magpies have let him go to reduce their wage-bill.
"I wanted experienced cover for Les Pogliacomi. Someone who would push him for his place," boss Brian Talbot said.
"Steve has now sorted out his contractual situation at Meadow Lane and he will be available for bot the FA Cup and the LDV Trophy ties."
