Newcastle defender Titus Bramble is already putting a disastrous Premiership campaign behind him.
Saturday's loss at Everton means Graeme Souness' men, currently 12th, can finish the season no higher than 11th.
Bramble told the Newcastle Journal: "We know this has not been good enough by Newcastle's standards. We should not be in the bottom half of the Premiership.
"I hope I am still here next season because I want to help put it right and get this club back into Europe."
Newcastle were knocked out of the Uefa Cup by Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-finals and lost 4-1 to Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final.
The club were also blighted by the acrimonious on-loan departure of midfielder Craig Bellamy to Celtic and the on-field scuffle between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer.
On a personal level, Bramble, 23, had formed a solid central defensive partnership with £8m signing Jean-Alain Boumsong but a hernia forced him to have surgery in March.
"It has been a funny season for me, personally," added Bramble.
"I feel as though I have finally established myself here. I got a run of games and was playing the best football of my career. That is something to be proud of and I am happy about that.
"But, overall, it has been a hugely-depressing season for the club and for me.
"I got injured at the worst possible time of the season and missed a lot of our important games.
"We have pressed the self-destruct button so many times, it is embarrassing.
"I do not think any of us can look back on this season with any pride because, as a team, we have not done nearly as well as we should."
