Roeder denies Bernard charge
Roeder was quick to deny any approach
West Ham manager Glenn Roeder has refuted suggestions that the London club made an illegal approach for Newcastle defender Olivier Bernard.
Earlier in the week, Bobby Robson expressed his anger at an unnamed Premiership club who he claimed had "tapped up" the Frenchman. A report in Saturday's Guardian newspaper alleged that the club in question was West Ham.
"I do not know where these suggestions have come from and as far as I am concerned there is no charge to answer," Roeder said after West Ham's 3-1 win over Ipswich. Bernard, who scored Newcastle's final goal in their 6-2 win over Everton on Friday, arrived at St James' Park in October 2000 and has since been offered a new contract. "We've offered him a very good contract for his age and for his quality in position, and he's been thinking about that," Robson said. "We know that he has been tapped by another Premiership club and we will be reporting that Premiership club."
