Xavier is likely to replace Dutch defender Michael Reiziger who is due to complete a move to PSV Eindhoven.
The 32-year-old Xavier is a free agent, having left Italian Serie A outfit Roma during the summer after failing to agree terms on a new deal.
Xavier has experience of the Premiership with Everton and Liverpool.
