Ferdinand cool on Elland return
Ferdinand's left Leeds for Man Utd in the summer
Rio Ferdinand has said that he is expecting a hostile reception when he returns to Leeds with his new club Manchester United on Saturday.
But the England defender - who left Elland Road for Old Trafford in the summer - has tried to play down the situation.
"Remember this is just football. It is not a war. It is not a life or death situation." Ferdinand's comments came after he was warned by England team-mate - and former Leeds colleague - Alan Smith that he will be "hammered" at Elland Road on Saturday.
And the defender realises that his £30m transfer to Leeds' biggest rivals will inevitably result in a barracking from the home fans. "I can understand Leeds fans must be upset with me and they'll want to scream and shout at me when I go back," Ferdinand told the Manchester Evening News. "They pay their money to get into the stadium and let their opinion be heard. I accept that. "Obviously, in an ideal world you would like them to give you a good reception and hope they remember the good times we had together.
"But I am not naive enough to think that is going to happen because I will be playing for Manchester United. "And I will be doing my utmost to make sure Manchester United get the result the players and our fans want."
