The newly-appointed manager could have as little as £5m to spend for next season and will have to sell players to raise cash.

So far Moyes has not spent a penny in his two months in the job despite scouring the transfer market.

The former Preston manager has been linked with a number of players, including Leicester's Robbie Savage - a rumour he has dismissed.

"Being linked with players constantly comes with the territory of a big club," Moyes said.

"But people will realise there is not a big pot of money here to go out and sign all the players we are being linked with."

Moyes has given a trial this week to out-of-contract England Under-20 goalkeeper Russell Howarth, who played for the Toffees in a friendly at Falkirk.

Slow progress

The only way Moyes will be able to spend is with funds from departures.

The Everton boss is currently waiting hopefully for Monaco to take up an option to buy Alex Nyarko, who has been on-loan in France all season.

That could raise £3m, while any of Paul Gerrard, Steve Simonsen, Tomasz Radzinski and Tobias Linderoth could find their stay at Goodison Park shortened.

But departures could be few. He said: "Players can only go at the end of their contracts. I cannot force them out.
