Simon Walton has joined Premiership side Charlton Athletic from Leeds United on a four-year deal.
The 18-year-old product of the Leeds Academy can play either as a centre-back or in central midfield.
"When this offer came out of the blue, I knew it was too good to turn down," Walton told the website of his representatives, the Stellar Group.
Charlton boss Iain Dowie added: "Simon is a talented boy and he might surprise a few people."
"He's very competitive, a very strong runner in terms of power and a great athlete who is very comfortable on the ball.
"We think he's a very good investment for the future, but looking at his attributes he's a lad capable of playing in the Premiership sooner rather than later as well."
As a 16-year-old Walton, was handed his debut in Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell's first match in charge at the start of the 2004-05 season and went on to make 33 appearances during the campaign.
However, he made just five appearances last season.
