Airdrie future back in doubt
Airdrie celebrate during a fine season on the pitch
Airdrie could still be celebrating this season
Airdrieonians' future is again back in the melting pot.

But chairman-elect Andy Gemmell insists that the Scottish First Division club have enough funds to survive until the end of the season.

There had been suggestions that the club presently in administration would go into liquidation over the weekend.

Gemmell admitted that there was still a question mark over an £800,000 deposit due from stadium builder and Ayr United chairman Bill Barr.

"We are in limbo at the moment," Gemmell told BBC Scotland.

Airdrie's whole squad was this week ordered by a sheriff to do community service for a year because the club was unable to afford a fine for a breach of planning regulations.

They have also pulled out of transfer deals because of a lack of cash.

"But we have sufficient funds to see the club through until the end of the season and we'll just need to see what happens after that," said Gemmell.

Much could depend on whether Airdrie win their dogfight with Partick Thistle to win promotion to the Scottish Premier League.

Barr may be waiting to see if the Lanarkshire club will qualify for an injection of cash from the SPL before committing himself to any rescue plan.

Gemmell claims that neither his management consortium, nor administrators KPMG, had been able to get an answer from Barr since December.

But the Airdrie boss was confident that his club would still be in existence next season and discounted suggestions that Barr wanted the stadium for the use of First Division rivals Ayr.

"I believe he now has planning permission for a new stadium of his own," said Gemmell.

"I am very confident that we will be around next season."

Barr insisted that his company had been in touch with KPMG this week and said: "We have done everything humanly possible to support Airdrie Football Club through this whole affair and we have gone to considerable trouble and some expense."

He said that he did not want to see any clubs in Scotland go out of business but wondered at what level Airdrie deserved to be playing at considering the poor attandances at the new Excelsior Stadium.

About 2,000 usually attend the 10,000-seater stadium built by Barr's company, which is still waiting to be paid the full amount.
