Marks out of 10 for the England players in their 1-0 friendly international defeat against Sweden at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.
David James: Made two decent saves but fumbled one cross into the box and it could be argued he should have saved Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goal.
Phil Neville: Solid enough to begin with but got worse as the game went on. Booked for a late tackle and easily beaten when Kim Kallstrom hit the post.
Jamie Carragher: Playing because Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge were out, Carragher proved he is not in their class. Weak link at the back and going forward.
John Terry: Impressive display at the heart of the defence and his partnership with Jonathan Woodgate showed potential. Led the backline with authority.
Jonathan Woodgate: Handled his duel with Ibrahimovic impressively, demonstrating great pace and composure. Unlucky to only get 45 minutes.
Nicky Butt: Covered plenty of ground in the holding role for Sven-Goran Eriksson but gave the ball away a little too often and too cheaply.
Owen Hargreaves: Fine free-kick hit the bar and also forced a good save from Andreas Isaksson. Was industrious and did his Euro 2004 hopes no harm.
Steven Gerrard: Threw himself into the role of captain by covering every blade of grass, but was let down by the lack of quality alongside him.
Alan Thompson: Struggled to get into the game on his debut and had just one lively spell before the break. Not on the ball enough to make an impact.
Wayne Rooney: Linked promisingly with Defoe and held the ball up well. Denied a goal first by the post and then a fine Isaksson save.
Darius Vassell: Showed great pace to latch on to Gerrard's pass, but it cost him as Mellberg's challenge forced him off with an ankle injury.
Substitutes
Jermain Defoe (replaced Darius Vassell, 12 mins): Got into the game immediately and was a real menace. Unlucky not to score - a fine debut.
Anthony Gardner (replaced Jonathan Woodgate, 46 mins): Faced a stern test on his England debut and looked nervy up against Ibrahimovic.
Gareth Southgate (replaced John Terry, 46 mins): Had more to do than Terry and Woodgate with England on the rack and stood his ground.
Joe Cole (replaced Alan Thompson, 60 mins): Sliced a volley wide in the dying moments, failed to stamp his authority on the game.
Alan Smith (replaced Wayne Rooney, 60 mins): Played in a withdrawn role on the right and put himself about in the usual aggressive manner.
Jermaine Jenas (replaced Steven Gerrard, 60 mins): Showed what a good passer of the ball he is but England were second best when he was on.
Emile Heskey (replaced Owen Hargreaves, 60 mins): Tried to work some openings but had little help in a frustrating cameo display.
Scott Parker (replaced Nicky Butt, 79 mins): Given little chance to exhibit his talents in just his second cap in Gothenburg.
