HIGHEriksson becomes England manager The FA breaks with tradition and appoints England's first foreign coach a decision that divides the footballing community. Rightly or wrongly Eriksson has perfect credentials after a successful career on the continent with Benfica Roma Sampdoria and Lazio. He later takes over in February 2001 after resigning from Lazio early.

HIGHEngland beat Germany 51 Any doubts over the Swede's suitability to manage England are cast aside with a wonderful win in Munich that delights the whole country. At 10 down England's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup are hanging by a thread but a Michael Owen hattrick a Steven Gerrard thunderbolt and a final flourish from Emile Heskey seal the victory.
