England player ratings
Marks out of 10 for the England players in their friendly 2-1 against the USA in Chicago.

David James - 5: Flapped at a free-kick but was saved by the post and will have to be more secure to win place back.

Glen Johnson - 5: Too casual at times and struggled to cope with Josh Wolff on the right of England's defence.

Sol Campbell - 6: The captain suffered an ankle injury early on but battled to half-time before coming off.

Wes Brown - 6: A bit rash at times and looked less than assured in suspect and ever-changing backline.

Ashley Cole - 6: A solid show but did not get forward as much as usual before being taken off injured.

Joe Cole - 7: Set up Richardson for the second goal and his attacking runs and passing caused USA problems.

Jermaine Jenas - 6: Failed to stamp his authority in central midfield and his lack of first team action showed.

Michael Carrick - 6: Found it tough to show his range of passing as he was afforded little time and space.

Kieran Richardson - 9: Dream debut as he scored a curling 20-yard free-kick and added a second with a well-struck shot in a lively match.

Alan Smith - 6: Hustled and harried in typically aggressive fashion but lacked the cutting edge to turn his effort into goals.

Andrew Johnson - 7: Won the set piece which led to England's opener but, despite a lively performance, did not get much change out of the USA defence.

Substitutes

Zat Knight (Replaced Campbell, 45 minutes) - 7: Coped well on his bow and used his height to good effect in defence and attack.

Phil Neville (Replaced Richardson, 59 minutes) - 6: His versatility came in useful when he switched to left-back for Cole.

Jermain Defoe (Replaced A Cole, 63 minutes) - 5: A lack of invention gave him little chance.

Luke Young (Replaced A Johnson, 76 minutes) - 6: Another debutant who gained experience.

Manager

Sven-Goran Eriksson - 7: Eriksson's faith in Richardson was fully justified and he shuffled his pack tactically well to help guide England to victory.
