Stam faces lengthy ban
Stam tested positive for nandrolone on 13 October
Italy's anti-doping officials have recommended that Lazio's Jaap Stam should be suspended from football for 10 months and fined 200 million lire, £64,000.
The former Manchester United defender tested positive for nandrolone on 13 October and a follow-up counter-analysis test gave a similar result. Holland international Stam, who left Old Trafford for £16.5m in August, met with anti-doping chiefs on Friday. Should Italy's football association, the FIGC, agree with the advice, Stam would miss the remainder of the Italian season. The 29-year-old has strongly denied taking any banned substances. Lazio team-mate Fernando Couto and Juventus' Edgar Davids failed similar tests last season while Josep Guardiola has failed two tests since joining Brescia.
