Alan Shearer pleads Paul Konchesky's case as the West Ham man is sent off

West Ham earned a point at Newcastle despite playing 35 minutes with 10 men after Paul Konchesky's red card for a professional foul on Jermaine Jenas.

Chances were thin on the ground and once West Ham went a man down, they defended valiantly, letting little get through to test Roy Carroll.

Steven Taylor and Alan Shearer's lack of communication which cost Newcastle a good late chance summed up their day.

Scott Parker wasted a chance to win it in injury time when he ballooned over.

Newcastle's first serious threat came when Charles N'Zogbia charged through on goal, drawing a full-length save from Carroll.

At the other end, Celestine Babayaro had to clear Yossi Benayoun's goalbound shot after good approach work by Teddy Sheringham.

First-half opportunities were generally thin on the ground, with Konchesky denying Bowyer a shooting chance when his deftly timed tackle took the ball off the Newcastle player's toes.

The day's main talking point came on 55 minutes, when Konchesky was dismissed for a tackle from behind on Jenas on the edge of the box.

It was a decision that was met with astonishment by the West Ham players, who felt Konchesky had taken the ball cleanly.

Carroll then had to make two impressive saves in quick succession as Newcastle tried to make the most of their advantage.

West Ham's attacking opportunities were already limited once Sheringham limped off early in the second half and a man down, they concentrated on defending.

The chorus of boos from the home fans and the West Ham fans' celebrations at the final whistle showed how differently they regarded their teams' efforts.

West Ham boss Alan Pardew on his plans to appeal against Paul Konchesky's red card:

"The referee has seen the replay. I showed him three or four times.

"I don't hold too much hope out because he seems adamant that it is a foul, and to be honest, I just can't fathom that.

"I felt there was a chuckle from the Newcastle fans because they couldn't quite believe he had been sent off."

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness:

"If you nullify Alan Shearer we're short on goal-getters, but we know that and we're working hard to change that.

"Give West Ham credit, they were ready to throw bodies in front of everything.

"We did create chances and on another day we would have scored, but today it wasn't to be."
