Notts County boosted their hopes of winning the League Two title after defeating Northampton on an afternoon when leaders Rochdale lost at Torquay.
Northampton had periods of dominance: Steve Guinan was denied by a Kasper Schmeichel save, while Dean Beckwith had a shot cleared off the line.
Luke Guttridge and Kevin Thornton were also both denied by last-ditch blocks.
Ben Davies struck after a mistake from Craig Hinton while Jason Steele saved from Lee Hughes and the goalscorer.
Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton: "We had the one-on-one with their keeper, two cleared off the line and a little bit of slack defending for their goal.
"They were the defining moments of the game, and we didn't get the right ones.
"I'm pleased with the way we played, I can't knock the effort and performance from all the players today."
Notts County manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"I thought Northampton were excellent in the first half and we needed to give ourselves a bit of shake at half-time. To which case I think we did and we were a lot better in the second half.
"I was a little bit disappointed at half time, and to be fair to the boys they were disappointed with themselves, but great credit to Northampton I thought they were excellent."
