Wolves will have to put themselves through the nerve-shredding process of the play-offs after they were held by Sheffield Wednesday.

West Brom's win made Wolves' result academic, while the Owls guaranteed their First Division survival.

After looking certainties for automatic promotion weeks ago, Wolves boss Dave Jones will now have to repair his side's shattered morale for the play-offs.

Wolves' afternoon got off to the perfect start with a goal after just 44 seconds.

Alex Rae's raking pass found Nathan Blake raiding down the left and he cut inside the Sheffield penalty area to square the ball back for Colin Cameron to side-foot home from close range.

Wolves came close to doubling their lead but Dean Sturridge's sharp shot on the turn was met by an equally sharp save from Kevin Pressman low down to his right.

With their own survival on the line, Wednesday hauled themselves back into the game and Shefki Kuqi took off on a strong run which ended with the Finn firing a powerful shot just wide.

Wednesday appealed for a penalty on 36 minutes when Kuqi appeared to nick the ball away from Wolves keeper Michael Oakes, who then caught the striker.

But referee Paul Durkin waved away penalty appeals, awarding a corner instead.

Durkin then evened that decision up at the other end as Rae's shot appeared to be clearly handled by a Wednesday defender.

  Drama at Hillsborough
44secs: Colin Cameron fires Wolves 1-0 ahead.
44mins: Simon Donnelly levels for Owls.
55mins: Shefki Kuqi taps in to put Owls 2-1 up.
60mins: Joleon Lescott levels for Wolves.
83mins: Kuqi's penalty saved by Oakes.

On the stroke of half-time, Wednesday deservedly equalised, albeit fortuitously.

Matthew Hamshaw curled a deep free-kick to the far-post where Oakes lost the flight of the ball and Simon Donnelly scored his fourth goal of the season off his thigh.

Wednesday almost made the kind of rapid-fire start to the second half as Wolves had done to the first, only for Oakes to turn aside Gerald Sibon's curling drive.

The game then turned inside the space of 60 seconds as Wolves were denied the lead for a second time by the woodwork when Pressman was beaten by Shaun Newton's angled 15-yard drive.

Wednesday countered almost immediately, and to devastating effect as Kuqi first sent Hamshaw clear to round Oakes.

The angle was tight as Hamshaw sliced his shot, but Kuqi was on hand to apply the finish from barely two yards and for his sixth goal in 17 appearances since his recent £1million move from Stockport.

Wolves hit back instantly to level, with Joleon Lescott's header from a Camara free-kick looping over Pressman.

Jones' side again suffered agonies as Rae was on the wrong end of a hairline offside decision which cost him a 64th minute goal.

As they sought the win which would give them hope, substitute Kevin Cooper was a yard wide with a superb shot on the turn.

With their automatic promotion hopes dashed, Wolves' afternoon almost took a further downward lurch when Kuqi was pulled down in the penalty box, but Oakes saved the Finnish striker's weak spot-kick.

Wolves: Oakes, Halle, Lescott, Pollet, Camara, Newton, Cameron, Rae, Kennedy, Sturridge, Blake. Subs: Murray, Naylor, Andrews, Cooper, Miller.
