Clubs are asking for more from the new deal
|
For the first time in Uganda, a religious company, Top Radio Ltd, will sponsor the country's league championship.
The 16-team Super Division, previously called the Nile Special Super League (NSSL), will now be known as the Top Radio Super League (TSL).
Top Radio, who also own a football club in the Super Division, are injecting US$58,000 (Shs103 million) each season.
The new sponsor will provide the clubs with playing materials as well as transport expenses.
Top Radio's package has come just in time to rescue the championship, after the league began without a sponsor.
Nile Breweries Limited, a beer company, terminated their sponsorship of the league early this year, claiming the Ugandan FA had breached certain contractual provisions.
The three-year deal signed by Top Radio's managing director, Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga and the FA boss Denis Obua includes cash prizes for outstanding players at the end of the season.
But some members of the Super Division Clubs Association (SDCA) say the money is insufficient.
"We needed time to look at that contract. We can't sell our rights for such a cheap offer," said the SDCA secretary Julius Kavuma Kabenge.
However, Obua said it is the best thing to happen to Ugandan football because there was no other sponsor available.
There is talk that Top Radio will advertise Christian messages on billboards at various stadia, a ploy which may not go down well with a section of the footballing public.
